Came across the fabulous Literary Gift Company on Home Shopping Spy and India Knight’s fabulous blog. Just how much do I want the I Capture the Castle bag (top left)? It’s my favourite book of all time and I urge you to read it if you haven’t already. I also want to buy the “Go away, I’m writing” mug for my friend Graeme and the Virginia Woolf tape and Louisa M Alcott notebook for myself. My brain has definitely been turned because I am too fond of books. For the better, I hope!

As part of my new healthy eating regime (which hasn’t happened today – see cocktail sausages for details!) I’ve decided to cook more salad and veg dishes and bought the Ottolenghi cookbook for inspiration. It’s nom. Heaps of garlicky, lemony niceness and salady goodness then a great meat section and a huge, fabulous baking chapter. It’s my new cookbook du choix.

Avie Address Labels March 24, 2009

These darling return address labels by avie¬†make sending letters that little bit easier and more stylish. I particularly love the birdies one at the top. My lovely friend Sarah bought some birdie bookplates for her little boy but they’ve sold out otherwise I’d have put them up too. I just wish that a) I wasn’t probably moving house in the summer making the address labels obsolete soon and b) didn’t have hundreds of books to affix bookplates to, making it an expensive business. But the address labels will be my first purchase for my new address (wherever that may be!)

I’ve just started reading Sally Brampton‘s memoir of her depression, Shoot the Damn Dog and it’s really good so far. I’m only on page 148 but I’ve laughed and cried and nodded in recognition. If you have depression, know someone who has or just want an insight into a debilitating illness, I don’t think you could do much better than get this book. Available here (and elsewhere!)

Re-imagined Book Covers February 26, 2009

I’m a bit of a book cover Nazi and only read good books with ugly covers under duress. Which is why I’m loving these re-imagined Harry Potter covers. I have six of the seven with the children’s covers but the cartoon on the last one was so hideous that I now have a mismatching adult version. These Lemony Snicket covers are also good:
